For students who want an exemption letter.

If you are from the EU, you will want to have your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). But, there are some things that you will need to keep in mind.

While an EHIC card is a great way to travel on holiday across the EU, there can be some issues when using it long-term in another country. Long-term means more than 6 months — however, this actually depends on your health insurance provider.

You will need to contact your health insurance provider and tell them how long you plan to stay in Germany and for what reasons to make sure you are still covered. If you do not contact them, you may be in breach of their terms and conditions which may make you uninsurable for a period abroad.

The last thing we want you to note is that some people have problems after 6 months, regardless of the initial response from their health insurance provider. You can lose coverage from your EHIC if you work in any capacity (even a small job), misfiled documentation, or a doctor’s inexperience with foreign health insurance cards.

Information for working students

If you intend to work part-time while studying, you will be considered a working student if you earn more than €450 per month (anything under this amount is considered micro-employment). . You will need to obtain German health insurance when you plan to take up a working student position or small job.

Please also note that additional rules apply if you are a student from outside the EU. Non-EU students are only allowed to work 240 half days or 120 full days with normal restrictions. Even if you stay within the 20 hour per week limit, if you go more than the annual half-day or full-day allowance, you may not be able to keep your visa.

What if my university is not on the list of recognized universities?

What if I am working full-time at an internship during my studies?
